Types of Alcohols and Their Properties

Methyl Alcohol (Methanol)

  • Common Name: Wood spirit.
  • Production: It is not produced by the fermentation of sugar.
  • Properties:
    • It is highly toxic.
    • It is the offending substance in liquor tragedies that causes blindness and death.

Ethyl Alcohol (Ethanol)

  • Production: Produced by the fermentation of sugar.
    • The enzyme responsible for converting glucose to ethyl alcohol is zymase.
    • Molasses (a by-product of sugar production) is an excellent raw material for its production.
    • The alcohol derived from the fermentation of germinated barley grains is used to make beer.
  • Primary Use: It is the primary alcohol in alcoholic beverages.

Denaturation of Alcohol

  • Definition: The process of making ethyl alcohol unfit for drinking is called denaturation.
  • Denaturing Agents: Substances added to denature alcohol include:
    • Methanol
    • Pyridine
    • Sometimes Potassium Cyanide
