  • Purpose of World Environment Day celebration- The purpose of celebrating this day is to raise awareness among people to protect the environment.

Historical Background

  • World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world.
  • First Environmental Summit, held in 1972 and the UN General Assembly designated 5 June as World Environment Day, marking the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Another resolution, adopted by the General Assembly the same day, lead to the creation of UNEP.
  • World Environment Day was celebrated for the first time with the slogan “Only One Earth.” in 1973 and after that every year World Environment Day is celebrated on 5 June.

Initiatives taken at India level

  • On this occasion, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has launched Amrit Dharohar and Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Income (MISHTI) Initiatives.
