India’s 33rd Elephant Reserve to come up in Uttar Pradesh

The Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (on October 21, 2022) gave its nod to Terai Elephant Reserve (TER), Spread over 3000 sq km. in Dudhawa-Pilibhit region in Uttar Pradesh.

  • TER will conserve four wild species- Tiger, Asian Elephant, Swamp deer and one horned rhinoceros in entire landscape.
  • Project Elephant: The GoI introduced Project Elephant in 1992 as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) with the objective to protect elephants, their habitats & corridors.
  • Karnataka has highest number of elephants followed by Assam & Kerala (Elephant census 2017).
