- The Government launched the National Social Assistance Programme on 15 August 1995 to fulfill the Directive Principles of State Policy, which aimed to provide the right to work, education, and public assistance.
- This Programme initially included the National Old Age Pension Scheme, the National Family Benefit Scheme, and the National Maternity Benefit Scheme.
- However, on 1 April 2001, the National Maternity Benefit Scheme was made part of the population control scheme.
